About Me

MeBorn an Englishman but now living in America, my life has been an interesting ride over the years.

I am a 42 year old Brit living in America’s Mid-West. Married with two Kids. Sometimes grumpy, always opinionated, and definitely grateful for this literary outlet for my musings.

The purpose of “A Limey In America” is to give you the reader a taste of what my experiences and perceptions are of life in America for an average Englishman. (Ed. I like to think I am average)

I’ve been here for almost ten years now and my perspective on life is getting ever more skewed towards the American way of life. To halt this cultural metamorphosis I have decided to put virtual pen to paper and discharge some of my biggest life gripes on the poor unsuspecting public.

We all speak English but the similarities end there my friends. This blog is a means for me to express my views and experiences, experiences that have varied from the funny, to the bizarre, to the challenging but almost always worthy of recording.

Thank you for visiting my tiny place on the web. If you stay for more than 5 minutes, you have my deepest admiration.

You should update this more often so I have reason to stay 5 minutes 🙂

I’m glad to see that there are more “limeys” like myself having similar experiences that have also driven them to blog about their new life in the new world. Feel free to check mine out (gmtminusfive.blogspot.com), and keep up the good work, you bloody Brit!

hey limey – if you like let’s get excellent chocolate into the american food marts. All we need is a group of likeminded people and my connections to the producers in Austria. Alles in Milch und Kakao. Let’s get started.

It is a sad indictment of my lack of attention to this blog, that I only just now read this wonderful chocolate business proposition, 3 years after it was posted. I could have been a chocolomillionaire(c) by now. (Yep, gonna copyright that bad boy!)

I’ve spent half an hour on your blog and have forwarded it to 2 of my sisters who live in the US (a place I for one could never live and be totally happy).
Good luck for the future and keep on posting your interesting blogs!

      Thank you Cristel.

I must be honest, life has rather gotten away from me in recent years and my ‘blogging’ has been next to zero. Well, it has been zero. Who am I kidding. As I sit here typing this, I have just returned from the funeral of my father-in-law. Life has a crazy way of treating us all at times.

I may return to blog my experiences again before long but as years have passed I have tried to suppress the anger and irritation over the myriad cultural differences I cannot change and instead, I have made a sub-conscious effort to try to accept what I can or find other ways to deal with being a resident alien.

If there is one truth I have learned, it is that in 12 years of living over here, I will always be the ‘foreigner’ the ‘curiosity’ that at best can be accepted but never thought of as truly belonging. I am glad that my son, although born in York, England has grown up an ‘American’ and will never have to fend off questions about the state of his teeth, his association with the Queen or hear the words “Aren’t you grateful we won the war for you?”

OMG I thought I was the only person that thinks that hersheys chocolate tastes like “sick”… LOL I too am British. Galaxy chocolate is the best.
